How the Morse module works

Every digit is five signals long, and each one is either short or long.

The number pattern is easier than it looks

You do not have to memorise ten separate codes. The digits are built from one direction, so knowing which end fills up gives you the rest.

1 to 5: dots build from the left

One dot for 1, two for 2, and so on to five dots for 5. The dashes fill the rest of the row.

6 to 0: dashes build from the left

Six starts with one dash, then two, three and four — and 0 is five dashes. The dots fill the rest of the row.

How do I tell a dot from a dash?

A dot is the short signal and a dash is the long one. Judge them against each other rather than against a stopwatch: the shorter mark is always the dot.

Call the signal one piece at a time

The module sends its five signals in order, so they can be passed on as they arrive instead of held in one player’s head.

    Say each signal as it arrives

    “Dot. Dot. Dot. Dash. Dash.” Then the tool returns 3.

    Give the digit, not the sequence

    Once the digit is decoded, “Three.” is the whole answer.

    Pause slightly between signals

    Pause slightly between signals if another player is entering them into the solver.

Common Morse mistakes

Five mistakes account for most Morse failures, and the first two are the ones that produce a confident wrong digit rather than an obvious one.

  • Mixing up short and long signals

    Short is a dot. Long is a dash.

  • Entering more than five signals

    Each digit uses exactly five. The input stops at five for this reason.

  • Starting from the wrong signal

    Clear the decoder if you miss the beginning of the sequence.

  • Guessing before the pattern is complete

    Use the possible-digit hint, but wait for all five signals before committing.

  • Reusing the previous code

    Start a new signal when the module gives a new sequence.
