How the Switch module works

What decides UP or DOWN?

The arrangement of the four lamps decides which rule runs in each column. The Braille digit then decides the position. The same four rules are always in play; only their order moves.

  • Odd or even

    UP when the Braille number is odd.

  • 1, 2, 6, or 9

    UP when the Braille number is 1, 2, 6, or 9.

  • Greater than 5

    UP when the Braille number is 6, 7, 8, or 9.

  • Compare with the red lamp

    UP when this column’s Braille number is greater than the one under the red lamp.

Switch example

Four columns, read from left to right:

  1. Switch 1 · Red · Braille 3

    Rule: Odd or even

  2. Switch 2 · Green · Braille 6

    Rule: 1, 2, 6, or 9

  3. Switch 3 · Blue · Braille 4

    Rule: Greater than 5

  4. Switch 4 · Yellow · Braille 7

    Rule: Compare with the red lamp

Those four columns give these positions:

  1. Switch 1 is UP.
  2. Switch 2 is UP.
  3. Switch 3 is DOWN.
  4. Switch 4 is UP.

Column 4 is the compare rule: the red column reads 3, and 7 is greater, so it is UP. Change any digit and the whole row of positions can change.

Use a short left-to-right callout

    Call the columns in order

    Always call the four columns from left to right, in a single pass.

  • 02

    Keep the callout short

    Say only the color and the number: “Red 3, Green 6, Blue 4, Yellow 7.”

  • 03

    Answer with numbers

    Reply with the switch number and its direction: “One up, two down, three up, four down.”

Common Switch mistakes

  • Mixing up the column order

    Always read and enter the four columns from left to right.

  • Comparing against the wrong red number

    The compare rule uses the Braille number in the red-light column, not the column beside it.

  • Treating 5 as greater than 5

    5 is DOWN for the “greater than 5” rule. Only 6 and above are UP.

  • Treating equal-to-red as UP

    It must be strictly greater. Equal to the red number is DOWN.

What do I need for the BOMBANANA Switch solver?

The four light colors and four Braille numbers, entered from left to right.

Does every switch use the same rule?

No. The arrangement of the four lamps assigns a different rule to each column.

What does “compare with the red lamp” mean?

Compare that column’s Braille number with the one under the red lamp. It is UP only if it is greater.

Is 5 UP for the “greater than 5” rule?

No. Only 6, 7, 8, and 9 are UP.

Can two switches have the same light color?

No. The four columns use one of each color. If your input has a duplicate, recheck the panel.
